The Breath of the Universe, the Breath of Infinity, the Breath of the Body/Yoga
What is the breath for a meditator? It is the place where one draws daily, immediate nourishment from the very source of life.
You have certainly heard of subatomic particles — the fundamental constituents of atoms and of life itself. Quantum physics shows that these particles respond to human observation: when observed with conscious attention, their behavior shifts from potentiality into definite manifestation. This reveals a profound truth: there is an inseparable relationship between human consciousness and the fabric of the universe.
In classical tradition, the subtle vital energy riding upon the breath is known as Prana. Breath is our constant companion from our first cry to our final release. Yet, most people breathe shallowly and anxiously, using only a fraction of their natural lung capacity.
Abdominal Breathing: The Natural Relaxation Anchor
To experience true physical tranquility before or outside meditation, learn the natural breath of a sleeping baby: abdominal breathing.
- Lie comfortably on your back on a mat or carpet, legs relaxed and slightly apart.
- Place one hand gently on your belly.
- As you breathe in softly through the nose, feel your belly gently expand like a soft balloon. Do not force your chest up.
- As you exhale naturally, feel the belly gently sink. Let each exhalation carry away accumulated muscular tension.
Practicing this for just 5 minutes deeply resets the autonomic nervous system, downregulating stress hormones and preparing your body for complete relaxation.
Breath During Meditation: Let It Be Free
During meditation itself, remember the golden rule: do not try to control or watch your breath.
When you close your eyes and think your mantra, the metabolic rate naturally drops. Breathing becomes extremely quiet and refined — sometimes so subtle that you may wonder whether you are breathing at all. This is a classic sign of deep, restful transcending: the body needs very little oxygen because it has entered a state of profound stillness. Trust this natural physiological rhythm completely.
Meditation is a poetic and practical journey into simplicity. We do not create false divisions between the spiritual and the material. Life is one, and consciousness is its source. With effortless meditation, your days become bright, centered, and serene.
